Chapter 11
Jimi lost concentration and commitment in his football practice, one of which he fought a boy who had said he was going to eat "mama's food". Jimi was offended because his mother was very ill and hospitalized. Ansa, Efua and Nene came to visit his mother regularly with Nene always praying for her. But one saturday morning, his mother died while Jimi was by her side.
Relations came to the house to offer their sympathy. Femi their elder brother came too and hugged Jimi for the first time. He used to bully Wole and Jimi when younger and one time flung Jimi down the stairs and got lashed by their father.
Mrs Solade was burried in a private cemetery. Jimi went to a deserted part of the cemetery and Efua went to meet him. She sat by him and held his hand and sympathized with him. Not long after, Nene and Ansa came to tell him that his father was calling for him.
Chapter 12
Mr Solade traveled out of the country for a business trip for 5 months promising to send them money regularly but breaking his promise to keep Wole and Jimi under his constant watch. Wole threw parties daily inviting hooligans of all sort and even tried to make Jimi take Heroin. Once a psychologist had come to school to give a talk on the dangers of drug use. She had mentioned heroin. 'One of the worst drug out there,' the woman had said. She showed them a short film of a scrawny white man writhing and gasping in the throes of heroin withdrawal. But the thought of his mother made Jimi refuse. Ansa mother had to visit them after her husband complained about their non-stop parties.
Jimi was gloom, lost concentration and was having low marks making his friends and teachers worry about him. Ansa expressed his worry on the type of bad influence Wole could have on Jimi to Nene and Efua, and they went to visit him and persuaded Jimi to stay with Ansa's family. Later that night, as Nene and Efua walked home. Nene displeased Efua by telling her not to treat Jimi like one of her sorry causes by just toiling with his feelings.
Chapter 13
Nene caught Ansa drawing Efua and he told her not to tell Efua as he planned to give her as a surprise gift because she encourages him. At the food kiosk, Efua told Jimi she wanted to be a doctor because she thought it nice to help people but Jimi didn't feel like being one as he was bitter they couldn't save his mother. They heard some voices floated from over the wall saying;
"You can touch the sky
Cause you're so fly
My love's so high..."
Jimi laughed and told her it was 'the Rhymers,' (a group of boys hoping to be naija next sensation) but she felt it was a silly lyric though she laughed too.
That afternoon, Nene went to Efua's house to reconcile with her but she wasn't at home. So she requested permission from Mrs Alli to take her biology textbook from Efua's room. Opening the textbook at home, she saw Efua's diary. She perused it and saw a letter of Efua where she wrote that she was in love with Miss Novi. Nene showed Jimi the letter saying they should help her but Jimi took it and stormed off.
Chapter 14
Joke informed Efua of a rumoured love letter written by her to miss Novi circulating around the school. The students blamed girls-only schools for such acts. Nene was angry with Jimi as she blamed him for spreading the info. The noise got to the principal and when he inquired, Ada the head girl told him of the letter and he demanded the retrieval of the original and copies of the letter. Then he sent Ada to fetch Efua. She found Efua vomitting in the toilet. Efua entered the principal office and seated was Mr Mallum, Mrs Tanimoro (the guidance counselor) and the vice principal. They sent for miss Novi who explained nothing happened between them besides attending charity group functions and she was cautioned of being too close to her student. Efua tried to explain that it wasn't what it seemed. When dismissed, Efua came out. She saw Jimi and tried to express her situation but he told her off.
Chapter 15
Mr Mallum flogged Jolly Stephens 10 strokes in the assembly ground for exposing Efua's letter and spreading photocopies of it because of the grudge he had against her for snapping at him when he tried to be friends with her. He had found it in Jimi's locker when he was looking for his note to copy.
Efua's mother tried to blame miss Novi and pleaded with Mr Mallum not to expel Efua pointing out that her husband was planning to buy some computers for the school.
Efua refused to eat for 3 days. She wandered into the street after having a bad dream and ended up falling asleep in the arms of a mad woman. She woke up hospitalized and diagnosed with severe malaria.
Chapter 16
Nene confessed to her mother that she caused Efua's predicament out of jealousy. She went to the hospital and confessed to Efua also and asked to be forgiven. Efua disclosed to her that her mother married her step father when she was 12 and the man's son was a bully while the man molested her and made her do improper stuffs and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. But the previous year, she hurt him badly with a knife but nobody, including her mother, believed her when she told them what he had been doing to her. Nene offered to help her face and overcome the humiliation of the recent event in school.
Chapter 17
Because Ansa wasn't supportive of what he did to Efua, Jimi went back home. There, Wole came home one night beaten and told Jimi that he was in trouble because he didn't get enough money from selling drugs for some thugs and he needed money. He took all of Jimi's money and told him to deceive their uncles and father to give him more money to send to him later. He took Jimi's watch and some shirts and left. Jimi recalled how Wole had taught him to ride a bicycle. It had always been then against the world.
Chapter 18
By monday, Seyi Lawal told Jimi that the lab was broken into and the new equipments stolen. A teacher said it was a clean job done by someone with the key. Unfortunately, there was only two keys, one with Mr Edet and the other with Jimi. Mr Edet asked for Jimi's key but he couldn't find it. Turned out, Wole and his goons had stolen the equipments using Jimi's key. They were caught trying to sell the items by the police. Wole claimed Jimi had masterminded the robbery and Jimi was taken to the prison for questioning.
Chapter 19
Wole pleaded with Jimi to take the blame to save himself from prison and Jimi agreed. The principal didn't press charges against Jimi. He punished him by banning him from the school's social activities and making him cut grasses in the school till their SSCE ended during which he was the gossip of the students. He was to publicly apologize to the students. He apologized to Efua and told her he liked her. After Jimi apologized to the school, Efua came out to defend his cause and rebuke the principal's negative attitude towards issues. Ansa called out that Jimi brother had done it and Jimi was only protecting his brother by taking the blame. Jimi cried because Efua stood to defend him and he didn't do so for her when the letter went viral. He told the truth and the thieves also confessed. The principal rebuked Wole for putting Jimi in such bad situation and pardoned his crime out of pity. Jimi reunited with Nene and Ansa but Efua was gone.
Chapter 20
All SS 3 students excelled in their final examinations. Jimi won a scholarship to study electrical electronics. Nene got admission to study accounting and Ansa to study architecture. After leaving, Efua wrote a meet to Jimi telling him she was going to study medicine and that she liked Jimi too and called his act to protect his brother the sweetest thing.
"What a year!" Ansa exclaimed and they all laughed.
